Lightning arrester for home: do you need one and what it costs

When a house needs lightning protection, how a home lightning arrester works, and what a basic installation involves.

A lightning arrester for a home is a rooftop air terminal (lightning rod) connected by a down-conductor to a dedicated earth pit. It gives a direct strike a safe path to ground instead of through the roof, wiring or occupants. A house needs one if it is tall relative to its surroundings, stands in an open or hilltop location, or sits in a high-lightning region.

Does your house need one

  • Tallest structure around, on a hill or open ground.
  • Area with frequent thunderstorms (much of India in the monsoon).
  • Metal roof, water tank or mast at the highest point.
  • Previous nearby strikes or sensitive electronics to protect.

How a home installation works

An air terminal is mounted at the highest point, a copper down-conductor runs down an outside wall, and it terminates in a copper bonded earth rod with low resistance. Surge protection on the main board adds a second layer for the wiring and appliances.
