An earth pit is the excavation and electrode that connects an installation to earth. The common types are the pipe pit, the plate pit, the chemical (maintenance-free) pit and the conductive-concrete pit. They differ in the electrode, the backfill and how much maintenance they need.
The types
| Earth pit type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Pipe pit | General earthing where moist soil is reachable |
| Plate pit | High fault current, rocky or shallow ground |
| Chemical / maintenance-free | Low, stable resistance with no re-treatment |
| Conductive-concrete (Terronite) | Rocky, sandy and high-resistivity soil, permanent |
Choosing and covering it
Pick the pit by soil resistivity, fault current and how much maintenance you can do. Every pit needs an accessible cover for the annual IS 3043 resistance test - see the earth pit cover sizes guide.
