A buried earthing strip ties electrodes together and forms the earth grid. It is laid in a trench about 500 to 600 mm deep, jointed with bolted or welded connections, bonded to each electrode, and tested before the trench is backfilled.
Installation steps
- Dig the trench 500 to 600 mm deep along the grid route.
- Lay the strip flat; avoid sharp bends that raise surge impedance.
- Joint strips with an overlap and two bolts, or exothermic weld; protect the joint.
- Bond the strip to each rod or pipe electrode with a clamp or weld.
- For high-resistivity soil, surround the strip with earth-enhancing compound.
- Measure earth resistance before backfill, then fill and compact.
